ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday announced to open an inquiry in light of the admission of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz’s leader Maryam Nawaz alleging that she directed officials to not give advertisements to a few selected news media organisations.

Speaking at a press conference, the information minister said that the PML-N government spent over Rs18 billion in their five-year tenure to influence media houses. “The investigation will be held by officials of the Information Ministry to assess who were the beneficiaries and victims of this illegal involvement.”

“The involvement of Maryam as a citizen in the distribution of public funds is not only immoral but also illegal,” he said. “This is a criminal offence under the Federal Investigation Agency. She testified herself how the dirty games were played under her watch.”

Chaudhry said that the incumbent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government cannot match the advertisement funds as the previous governments because it has to abide by a Supreme Court’s ruling.

“We will also probe those who availed cash and plots,” he said.

The information minister requested the National Accountability Bureau to look into the case to probe how the national exchequer was being used according to the whims and wishes of a party official.
