The region of Gilgit-Baltistan has become a hot topic since PM Imran Khan, in a surprise decision announced the elevation of G-B to the status of its fifth legal provisional province. G-B to observe its 3rd elections on November 15 and every major political party of Pakistan has already started dreaming of ruling this geostrategic ‘Jewel’. Over the dozens of political and religious parties, including the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek E Insaaf (PTI), PML – N, and Pakistan People’s Party are contesting for the polls scheduled on coming Sunday.
Wearing cultural hats, donning the traditional dresses, and giving emotional fiery speeches; leaders of every political party are busy luring the people of G-B to sell their manjan and acquire a chance to reign over them. Interestingly, the two parties which are going head over heels to win G-B are those who haven’t even turned a blind eye to the deprivation of Gilgit-Baltistan in many years of their government.
Yes, we are talking about the corrupt and Indian apologist parties, PML-N and PPP. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maryam Nawaz, holding the ropes of their political horses are running from town to town in G-B to get the alms of votes, but it seems that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have caught their con and deception behind their bright smiles.
PTI is The Leading Party In Gilgit-Baltistan – Survey reports
According to the recent surveys conducted by Gallup Pakistan and Pulse Consultant, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf is leading in the region with a heavy margin. The surveys were conducted to assess the popularity of the parties for the upcoming elections, and the results put PTI ahead of PPP, while the PML-N is in the 3rd position.
The survey shows that Imran Khan is the most popular leader in GB following by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Nawaz Sharif.
The respondents were asked which political party they would vote for on 15th Nov (the Election Day). In response, 27 percent of Gallup respondents said they would vote for PTI, 24 percent said PPP, and 14 percent take the name of PML-N. Whereas 35% of the Pulse respondents said they would vote for PTI, 26% said PPP, and again 14% said PML-N. However, the Gallup survey shows there is a gap of only 3 percent between the PTI and PPP as the first choice of voters. In Pulse survey, this gap is 9 percent. But the trend is the same – PTI is the first choice, PPP second, and PML-N third.
The next survey was about the favorite leader. When asked 42% of Gallup respondents named Imran khan, 17% said Bilawal Bhutto, and 15% percent named Nawaz Sharif. Maryam Nawaz only manages to acquire 3% votes for her popularity amongst the people of G-B. Pulse Consultant also received almost the same answer to a similar question with 41% naming Imran Khan as the most popular leader, 23% said it was B.B Zardari, and 16% named Nawaz Sharif as the most popular leader.
Why G-B Is Becoming A Centre Of Interest?
It is obvious why these two parties are desperate to get the hold in G-B. The reason lies in G-B importance and strategic position in Asia. Gilgit-Baltistan has acquired new and enhanced geopolitical importance since the CPEC has been launched. The geostrategic Jewel of the 19th century’s Great Game between Russia and India has once again grabbed the eyes of all the massive countries because of being the center of the billion-dollar project. Especially India is walking over hot coals since Pakistan has announced G-B as its legal province.
According to a report, India needs G-B to abort China’s advance to the Indian Ocean through CPEC, and having a claim recognized by the INSC resolution is quite helpful in this regard. Secondly, India has been desperate to have access to Central Asia. In its desperation, India went for a doomed to fail route through Afghanistan, starting at Iran’s Chabahar port, which it developed.
But since the launch of CPEC, India has been raising its claims on G-B in a manner that has not been seen before. Traditionally India only spoke of Pakistan Administered Kashmir in its policy pronouncements. Now India has upped the ante on G-B by calling on China to stop investments and infrastructure development in the region, including blocking financing for the construction of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam at the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. This is India’s plan and who can be better than these corrupt parties to support its stance?
Like KPK, Gilgit-Baltistan Shows Its Patriotism for the Country Rejecting These Indian Apologist Parties
This thing is not veiled nor shrouded that PPP and PML-N are working on the Indian agenda, and surely if they rule the land, India will benefit the most. But the loving and patriotic peoples of Gilgit Baltistan have refused to give in to any trick or deception. They have announced their decision that for them the love of their country is way above any petty politics. Like KPK, the nationalist Baltistanis has announced that they would not allow the followers and supporters of India to spread evil and hate on the beautiful and serene land of Gilgit-Baltistan.
