Seminar held to mark Journalism Independence Day at Lahore Press Club

A seminar on Journalism Independence Day was held at Lahore Press Club on Friday.

President Press Club Azam Chaudhry, Secretary Press Club Abdul Majeed, former president Shahbaz Mian and Qamar Zaman Bhatti were also present on the occasion.

Special guests included journalists Hussain Naqi, Khawar Naeem Hashmi and Masoodullah, who were tortured during martial law, also attended the seminar

Hussain Naqi addressing the participants said that the country was going through a critical situation at the moment.

All politicians have to sit together and solve the problems otherwise the country will go to bloodshed, he feared.

Journalists should raise their voice so that democracy can be strengthened, they urged, adding that politicians are inviting non-political forces in their personal interests.
President Press Club Azam Chaudhry on the occasion said that journalism is a great field which has played its role in the security and development of the country and in order to pave the way for democracy, journalists faced imprisonment and sacrificed their lives.

 He blamed the media owners’ unions for the plight of journalists in the current situation and said that they use journalists for their own benefit and then exploit them.

Warning the government of the time, he said that harassment of journalists should be stopped and independent journalism could not be suppressed by force. He also strongly condemned the tactics used by the government to suppress journalists.
